Late G.B. Shankawalkar, pioneer in Periodontology, whose birth anniversary falls on 1st august is celebrated as Oral Hygiene Day. On this occasion Government Dental College and Hospital, Mumbai celebrated Oral Hygiene Day by conducting various programs, rallies, flash mobs, lectures and various contests.

The celebration was kick started on 31st July 2022 on the streets of Nariman point, where Sunday Fun Street is held. The program was conducted under the guidance of Dean of Govt. Dental college, Mumbai Dr. Dimple Padawe and co ordinated by Dr. Rajesh Gaikwad Professor of Dept. of Periodontology and in association with Indian Society of Periodontology, Indian Dental Association- Mumbai branch and Indian society of periodontology- Mumbai study Group. The event included Flash mobs which aimed to spread awareness among masses along with display of posters and placards for the same. Post graduate students, Interns, and undergraduate students of GDCH Mumbai actively participated in this event.

On the occasion of Oral hygiene Day 1st august, A rally was organised by the GDCH Mumbai upto Nagar chowk, CSMT.

Shri Virendra Singh Commissioner Medical Education and Research appreciated and conveyed best Wishes for Oral Hygiene Day 2022.

This rally was inaugurated by Dr. Deeliep Mhaisekar, Director Medical Education and Research and Dr. Vivek Pakhmode Joint Director (Dental) Medical Education and Research. This rally was conducted under the guidance of Dean Dr. Dimple Padawe, With all supports from Heads of Various Departments. This rally was organised by Dept. of Periodontology headed by Dr. C. D. Dhalkari and co ordinated by Dr. Rajesh Gaikwad, Dr Akshaya Banodkar, Dr Gulnar Sethana, Dr Niofar Attar, Dr Chitra Patil and Dr Sangita Barot.

In this rally Post graduate students, Interns, and undergraduate students of GDCH Mumbai actively participated in which they displayed placards, posters, banners and chanted various slogans to motivate and educate people regarding Oral hygiene. This rally was wrapped up by performing a flashmob near CSMT which sees many commuters and passersby.

Also, along with above mentioned events, Various free dental checkups and counselling sessions were organised in various Police Training centers. Various contests such as Video reel contest, slogan contest, smile contest, rangoli contest were also organised to celebrate this day.
