Oral and maxillofacial surgeons week celebration
The Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Government Dental College and Hospital, Mumbai, celebrated the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon’s Day over a period of a week with great enthusiasm.
To commemorate the occasion, various events were organised under the able guidance of our Dean Dr. Dimple Padawe

Day 1: BLS Workshop
आंतरराष्ट्रीय मुखशल्य चिकित्साशास्त्र दिवसाचे औचित्य साधून पहिल्या दिवशी दिनांक 10/02/26 रोजी मुख शल्य चिकित्साशास्त्र विभाग, शासकीय दंत महाविद्यालय आणि रुग्णालय मुंबई येथे मूलभूत जीवन समर्थन (बेसिक लाइफ सपोर्ट BLS) चा कार्यक्रम आयोजित करण्यात आला.या प्रसंगी भूलतज्ञ डॉ. पौर्णिमा सोनकांबळे यांच्या नेतृत्वाखाली त्यांच्या चमूने उपस्थित सर्वांना BLS चे प्रशिक्षण दिले. यावेळी ६८ आंतरवासित्तानी मोठ्या उत्साहाने उपस्थित राहून प्रशिक्षण घेतले.
An insightful session on Basic Life Support (BLS) was conducted, highlighting the importance of life-saving techniques in emergency situations. The event featured a comprehensive hands on workshop led by Dr. Poornima, an accomplished anaesthetist from JJH, along with her dedicated team.
During this interactive training, 68 interns participated enthusiastically as they were immersed in the critical skills required for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR). The instructors meticulously guided them through various scenarios, practising on mannequins to simulate real-life emergencies. This practical approach allowed the interns not only to learn the theoretical aspects of BLS but also to apply their knowledge in a controlled environment, solidifying their understanding of the techniques.
The interns expressed their gratitude for the opportunity to gain this essential knowledge, as they recognise the significance of being equipped to respond effectively in emergencies. Their active engagement and eagerness to learn underscored the success of the session, making it an impactful experience for all who attended.
Feedback from the participants highlighted the session’s effectiveness and Dr. Poornima’s engaging teaching style, further motivating them to continue their education in life-saving practices. Overall, this event was a significant step towards preparing these future healthcare professionals to handle critical situations with confidence and expertise
Day 2: Suturing and wiring workshop
दुसऱ्या दिवशी दिनांक ११/०२/२६ रोजी कान, नाक, घसा तज्ञ डॉ. निता घाटगे यांनी मुख कर्करोग जनजागृती बद्दल सविस्तर माहिती देत त्यातील मुख शल्य चिकित्सकाची असलेली प्रमुख भूमिका उपस्थितांना समजावून सांगितली. तसेच विभागाकडून उपस्थित सर्वासाठी सुचर आणि वायरिंग चे प्रत्यक्ष कृती प्रात्यक्षिक घेण्यात आले.
We organised a series of insightful academic sessions and hands-on activities aimed at strengthening surgical fundamentals and spreading awareness about the speciality. One of the highlights of the day was the enlightening lecture delivered by our esteemed invited ENT surgeon, Dr. Neeta Ghate. Her presentation on “Oral Cancer Awareness and the Role of the OMFS Surgeon” captivated the audience. Dr. Ghate emphasised the critical importance of early diagnosis in improving patient outcomes and the necessity for interdisciplinary collaboration among healthcare professionals.
Following Dr. Ghate’s impactful lecture, Dr. Abhilasha Yadav, Professor and Head of the Department, took the stage to illuminate the vast scope and significance of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Her engaging presentation not only highlighted the diverse surgical interventions performed within the speciality but also underscored the evolving challenges and opportunities in the field. Dr. Yadav’s insights inspired many interns and students to cultivate a passion for this dynamic area of healthcare, reinforcing the importance of ongoing education and innovation.
Next, the focus shifted to the vital role of nursing professionals in surgical management. Staff Nurse Smita Kadam delivered an informative talk on “Awareness of OMFS Procedures and the Role of Nurses.” She skillfully highlighted how nurses contribute significantly before, during, and after surgical procedures. From preoperative assessments to postoperative care and patient education, Nurse Kadam illustrated the multifaceted responsibilities of nursing staff in ensuring optimal recovery and support for patients undergoing oral and maxillofacial surgeries.
To further enhance practical skills and reinforce the theoretical knowledge gained throughout the day, a hands-on suturing and wiring workshop was organized for the interns. Guided by experienced faculty, the interns demonstrated remarkable enthusiasm and active participation as they practiced essential suturing techniques and wiring methods. The interactive nature of the session not only fostered skill development but also strengthened the sense of community and teamwork among the interns, setting the stage for a collaborative future in their careers.
With this we concluded Day 2.
Day 3: CSMT camp
तिसऱ्या दिवशी, दिनांक १२/०२/२६ रोजी एशियाटिक वाचनालय येथे फ्लॅश मॉबचे आयोजन करण्यात आले होते आणि त्यानंतर छत्रपती शिवाजी महाराज टर्मिनस येथे पाचशे हून अधिक लोकांची मुफ्त मुख तपासणी करण्यात आली व त्यांना मौखिक आरोग्याचे महत्त्व समजावून सांगण्यात आले.
The day commenced with an electrifying flash mob at the iconic Asiatic Library, Fort, a cherished heritage site in Mumbai. This dynamic performance captured the attention of passersby and effectively conveyed important messages regarding trauma awareness and the significance of early diagnosis and management of oral cancer. The performance not only entertained but also served as a pivotal educational tool, prompting conversations about health awareness in a fun and interactive way.
Following the flash mob, the department organised a comprehensive oral cancer screening camp at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT), one of the city’s busiest transport hubs.
Over 500 individuals took advantage of this initiative, receiving free screenings for oral malignant and premalignant lesions, along with information about related health conditions. This outreach effort was significant in promoting early detection—a critical factor in improving outcomes for oral cancer. Trauma and cancer awareness pamphlets were distributed to taxi drivers and shop vendors near the CSMT station.
The entire day was marked by impactful participation and meaningful engagement from all involved. Team members worked diligently to coordinate the events, ensure smooth operations at the screening camp, and facilitate discussions with the public. The enthusiasm from the community underscored the significance of our outreach efforts and highlighted the pressing need for increased awareness regarding oral health. With that, we concluded Day 3.
Day 4: Poster Competition
चौथ्या दिवशी, दिनांक १३/०२/२६ रोजी पदवीपूर्व विद्यार्थ्यांसाठी पोस्टर आणि रिल्स ची प्रतियोगिता आयोजित करून आंतरराष्ट्रीय मुखशल्यचिकित्साशास्त्र दिवस साजरा करण्यात आला.त्या प्रसंगी, संस्थेचे माजी विद्यार्थी व नामांकित तज्ञ, डॉ. हेमंत धुसिया, यांनी त्यांच्या प्रत्यक्ष जीवनातले अनुभव सांगत उपस्थित सर्व मुखशल्य चिकित्सकांना त्यांच्या भावी वाटचालीस मोलाचे मार्गदर्शन केले.त्यानंतर कर्करोग आणि मुख शल्य चिकित्सा तज्ञ डॉ. उत्तरा के. एस. यांनी मानसिक आरोग्याबद्दल चर्चा करून उपस्थितांचे मार्गदर्शन केले.
We organised a Poster Competition for undergraduate students, which received an overwhelming response. The creativity, scientific insight, and dedication exhibited by the participants were truly commendable. Students showcased a range of topics related to Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, highlighting not just clinical procedures but also preventative measures and awareness strategies. The energy and enthusiasm that filled the room as students discussed their ideas fostered a vibrant atmosphere, sparking intellectual exchange and collaboration among peers.
Alongside the Poster Competition, we conducted a Reel/Video Making Competition aimed at spreading public awareness about the role of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons and the wide spectrum of procedures we perform. The participants surpassed our expectations with their innovative ideas, engaging narratives, and visually captivating presentations. Their ability to simplify complex concepts into relatable content was impressive, demonstrating a profound understanding of their audience. Among the many remarkable submissions, one poster was selected for pamphlet distribution as part of our public awareness initiative, ensuring that the message reaches a broader audience.
We were also privileged to have an inspiring lecture from our esteemed alumnus of Government Dental College and Hospital (GDCH), Dr. Hemant Dhusia. Dr. Dhusia shared insights from his professional journey, taking us on a reflective walk down memory lane, recounting his postgraduate days, challenges faced, and successes achieved. His words served as a motivating force for the budding surgeons, encouraging them to pursue their dreams with passion and dedication. The sharing of personal experiences not only inspired the students but also reinforced the value of mentorship and the bonds formed during their academic journeys. To further enrich our understanding, we included video messages from eminent personalities who are also alumni of GDCH. These messages provided additional perspectives on the evolving landscape of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, offering students guidance and encouragement from those who have successfully navigated their careers.
Adding further depth to the day, a valuable session on “Mental Health among Surgeons” was delivered by Maxillofacial Surgeon and Oncology Specialist, Dr. Uttara KS. In her insightful talk, Dr. KS highlighted the importance of emotional resilience and well-being amidst the demands of the surgical profession. Addressing topics such as stress management, work-life balance, and the impact of mental health on professional performance, she provided practical strategies for maintaining mental wellness. By fostering open dialogue around mental health, the session aimed to destigmatise conversations regarding emotional challenges faced by medical professionals, encouraging a supportive environment for future surgeons.
